---------- November 24, 2024 ----------

This is Mr. Lee with your Sunday Message and updates for the week.   On behalf of our staff, we hope you have a safe and joy-filled holiday.  November 25-29 is Thanksgiving Break.  School closed and re-opens Monday. December 2.  Breakfast starts at 7:15.  First Bell is 7:35 and students need to be with their class by 7:40.

  • Looking ahead: December 2-20: Winter FAST ELA and Math window for K-5th.

Attendance Tracking

  • First Bell is 7:35 and students need to be with their class by 7:40.

With the holiday season and multiple extended breaks approaching, we wanted to highlight the importance of school attendance. School attendance is one of the most important factors in student academic and social-emotional success. Please be mindful that while some work can be made up after an absence, the classroom learning experience is unable to be replicated. Students (even as young as Kindergarten) who attend school regularly are significantly more likely to achieve proficient academic levels in reading and math, do better on tests, as well as more likely to graduate and be successful in future endeavors.

  •

Missing just 2 days a month means your child misses 10% of the school year. Over the course of their K-12 education, this amounts to the equivalent of missing one entire school year! Excused or not, these missed learning days matter. Students missing 2 days per month are less likely to read proficiently by third grade, achieve in middle school and graduate from high school.

We care about our students and when they are in school, we know they are healthy, safe, and learning. Chronic absenteeism impacts students, no matter their age or grade.

Ongoing Reminders:

  • November is Native American Heritage Month

  • In honor of Native American Heritage Month, students raised the Kumeyaay Band flag at district headquarters for the second year in a celebration that also featured bird singers, powwow dancers, and student speakers.

Native American Heritage Month celebrates the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and important contributions of Native people. Celebrating the month raises a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

The Kumeyaay were the original caretakers of the land where San Diego Unified schools and offices now reside. The flag-raising event is just one way the district shows solidarity with our Native American students and the larger Kumeyaay community.
