  • Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, students raised the Kumeyaay Band flag at district headquarters for the first time in a celebration that also featured bird singers, powwow dancers, and student speakers.

Native American Heritage Month celebrates the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories and important contributions of Native people. Celebrating the month raises a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

The Kumeyaay were the original caretakers of the land where San Diego Unified schools and offices now reside. In addition to a Native American Heritage Month Board Resolution, the flag-raising is just one of many steps the district is taking this year to show solidarity with our Native American students and the larger Kumeyaay community.

“My community and my people are still here, and I really want to acknowledge that,” said Evette, a fifth grader at Mountain View UTK-8 School. “It’s amazing and makes me feel proud that with this flag raising we are going to be acknowledged by other people as well.”

The flag itself is inspired by an elder from the Jamul tribe and approved by a committee of leaders of the region’s 12 bands of Kumeyaay. The flag shows the tribal logos of each band, displayed in a circle.

Find educational resources in the district’s Cultural Awareness Center and learn about future cultural events and opportunities with the district’s Johnson O’Malley Indian Education Program.
