Message from Nursing and Wellness:

Dear San Diego Unified families and colleagues,

As we approach Thanksgiving break, and winter break shortly after, we want to remind all staff, students and their families to take precautions to stay well during the holiday season. During this time, when many families will be traveling and/or gathering with friends and family, illnesses such as the influenza virus (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, and the common cold can easily spread.

The district is providing all students and staff with at-home COVID-19 test kits to help our school communities have greater peace of mind about returning to school safely after the break. We encourage students and staff to test on the last Friday (November 25) of the break and on Monday morning (November 28) before returning to campus. Testing before returning to school is recommended but not required. Additional test kits for students and staff are available at the Ed Center COVID-19 testing facility. If you test positive for COVID-19, please do not attend school and report your illness here.

As a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms of any cold-like virus, until those symptoms start to improve and there is no fever for 24 hours (without use of fever-reducing medication). Keeping your sick child home will be a great benefit for the health and wellness of our students and staff.

What Symptoms to Look For

  • The flu and COVID-19 are both spread from person-to-person, especially indoors and in crowded places. Symptoms for both viruses can include fever, headache, and muscle and joint pain, as well as a sore throat and coughing.
  • RSV is a respiratory virus that has been detected in previous cold and flu seasons. Symptoms of RSV include cough, runny nose, and fever. Treatment consists of managing symptoms.

Tips to Avoid Getting Sick
San Diego County health officials offer these tips to prevent getting sick:

  • Consider wearing a well-fitting, good-quality mask, especially indoors or in crowded spaces
  • Wash hands thoroughly and often
  • Use hand sanitizers, if unable to wash hands
  • Stay away from sick people
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Clean commonly touched surfaces and/or wash/sanitize your hands after using them.
  • Stay up to date on COVID-19 and flu vaccines

Thank you for your partnership in helping us keep our students and staff healthy. If you have questions about these topics, please call 211 or contact your school nurse. We thank you for your cooperation and support.

Sincerely,

Susan Barndollar

District Recognizes Filipino American History Month, Celebrates 35 Years of Filipino Language Program

San Diego Unified is proud to recognize October as Filipino American History Month — an opportunity to learn and appreciate the significant role Filipinos have played in American history, and to learn more about Filipino culture and contributions.

On Tuesday the Board of Education issued a proclamation recognizing Filipino American History Month and celebrating the 35th year of the district's Filipino language program. The proclamation also honored the important role of organizations such as the Filipino American Educators Association of San Diego County (FILAMEDA) in creating and supporting this language program.

Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American group in the nation and the third largest ethnic group in California, and San Diego Unified currently serves nearly 5,000 Filipino American students across the district.

The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, in what is now Morro Bay, California.  Learn More

---------- September 11, 2022 ----------

Additional info:

  • Our traffic flow is getting better everyday and it will take us all to continue to make it better.  Here are suggested ways to help us increase efficiency:
  1. Grades UTK-1 are the only families required to pick up their student 1-1.  This is crucial for safety of our youngest learners.  The designated area to the left of the Lunch court gate is meant for UTK-1 families only.
  2. Grades 2-5 families, we strongly recommend you to make arrangements with their students ahead of time to designate a pick up area.  Having a designated place will reduce anxiety and crowding while students look for caregivers.  If you choose to park, please wait by your car (preferred) or to the side of the drive up lanes.
  3. We strongly encourage caregivers of 2-5th grade students that drive to use of the drive up lanes or park and wait by your car.  Standing by the dismissal gate and looking for your student creates more crowding.

Thank you for your help.

---------- September 4, 2022 ----------

---------- August 28, 2022 ----------

This is Mr. Lee with your Sunday Message and updates for the week.  We are excited to welcome our families and students to the first day of school.  It will be the busiest drop-off day of the year and I suggest you walk or park outside of the school if you need to leave campus quickly.  As always, we encourage safe driving throughout our parking lots to ensure safety for all.  If you are driving onto campus there is a max 15 mph limit and we ask that you limit distractions while traveling.  It takes all of us to keep our community safe.

On the first day, families are welcome to come onto campus to take pictures, capture memories, and walk their student to class.  If you choose to walk your student to class, we ask that you ease the transition by waving to them as they walk into class.  This will allow for a smooth transition and allow us to safely secure our campus as families exit.  After the first day, we will be securing campus and only allowing students to come in.

If you are able to stay around til 8:10, we will be having a meet and greet with AP Ligon and I in the Aud.

Please click on the links below to review the information and familiarize yourself with our procedures.

Thank you and have a great night.

Hello San Diego Unified Families and Colleagues,

We hope you and your family had an enjoyable Spring Break and look forward to seeing our students and staff back healthy tomorrow morning.

All students and staff are encouraged to use their iHealth Rapid Antigen Test Kit to self-test for COVID-19 tomorrow morning before coming to campus. Testing and uploading results is not mandatory for returning to campus, however testing is an important tool to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. By testing before returning from Spring Break, staff and families can ensure that they are not returning to campus with a COVID infection.

Additional details on how to use the self-administered COVID-19 tests and upload results can be found on this instructional flier: EnglishKarenSpanishSomaliSwahiliTagalogVietnamese

As of April 4, 2022, wearing masks at schools and district offices is no longer required but is strongly recommendedAs a school community, we fully support the decision of all students, families, and staff to continue wearing a mask or not. Harassment or bullying of anyone based on this personal choice will not be tolerated.

Below are some great resources for staff and families to help students understand and ease fears and anxiety they may be experiencing:

San Diego Unified is closely monitoring the COVID-19 status in our school communities. In the event that the State or County were to revert to requiring masks at schools, the District would follow those guidelines. Similarly, if the COVID-19 risk in our area increased to a level that would necessitate requiring masks, the District would follow the best medical advice and practices recommended.

With the change in mask requirements, we realize there are many questions about what other changes there may be in district COVID-19 policies. Students and staff should continue to self-monitor for symptoms each day and stay home if not feeling well. Additionally, enhanced ventilation, proper hand hygiene, contact tracing, and case management remain intact. For more details and updates on COVID-19 policies, please refer to the COVID-19 Information page.

  • District Mask Policy Update 3/5/22

Students, staff and visitors to campus will no longer be required to wear masks indoors effective April 4. All other COVID-19 safety mitigations and protections including; air filtration, testing, handwashing, distancing when possible, self-screening for symptoms, case management, and contact tracing will remain in place.

Two weeks ago when district staff spoke with advisors from UC San Diego, the majority felt at that time that removing a mask mandate was premature, as the local COVID-19 case rate remained high. On Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) moved San Diego County into the lowest level of concern. For that reason, we believe it is appropriate to update our safety measures at this time.

We will once again provide all students and staff with at-home COVID-19 tests to use before returning to campus following Spring Break. This strategy worked extremely well before Winter Break, and we are grateful to have enough tests to be able to repeat the process.

We will also continue to monitor federal, state and local guidelines and remain ready to return to indoor masking if our community were to enter a higher level of concern. Additional info & resources will be available on the district COVID-19 Information page.
